In this episode of The Sarah Centrella Show, I sit down with Molly Smith, host of the WTF (What the Funk) podcast, to talk about what it really takes to recognize when your life is no longer aligned, trust yourself enough to make a change, and get out of the emotional funks that keep you stuck.
Molly shares her journey from a 25+ year corporate career, where so much of her identity and self-worth had become tied to her title and professional success, to completely restructuring her life around alignment, purpose, sobriety, coaching, and energy healing. After reaching the VP level, she began realizing that the career she had worked so hard to build was also draining her. In 2023, she finally told her boss the truth about what was no longer working and negotiated away nearly half of her executive responsibilities, even though it meant accepting a lower title and less money. That decision gave her the mental and emotional space to begin building the next chapter of her life.
We talk about career burnout, corporate identity, self-worth, people pleasing, external validation, self-trust, personal reinvention, and what happens when you finally stop making decisions based on who you think you are supposed to be.
Molly also shares her sobriety journey and what began as a 100-day alcohol-free experiment in January 2023. She explains the physical, mental, and emotional changes she experienced after removing alcohol from her life and why she ultimately chose to continue living alcohol-free. We also get into something I think is incredibly important when talking about sobriety, stress, anxiety, emotional regulation, and personal growth: removing one coping mechanism does not automatically heal the reason you needed it in the first place. It is incredibly easy to replace drinking with scrolling, binge-watching, overworking, food, shopping, or another behavior that allows you to avoid feeling whatever is underneath it.
Molly breaks down her practical framework for getting yourself out of a funk. Instead of immediately trying to think positively or push away a negative emotion, she starts by naming what she is actually feeling. From there, she gets grounded through her breath and body, separates what is within her control from what isn't, and identifies one aligned action she can take next.
We also have a really interesting conversation about hustle culture and whether hustle itself is actually the problem. Molly and I both came to a similar conclusion: when hustle is being driven by scarcity, insecurity, fear, comparison, or the belief that your worth depends on how much you accomplish, it will eventually burn you out. But when your actions are connected to purpose, passion, excitement, and something you genuinely want to create, hard work can feel completely different. It becomes aligned action instead of constantly trying to prove yourself.
Then we dive into Molly's work as an Emotion Code practitioner and her approach to energy healing and emotional release. Molly explains the Emotion Code theory that emotions that aren't fully processed can remain as what practitioners call "trapped emotions," and how practitioners use muscle testing and an emotional chart to identify the emotion, when it may have originated, and whether they believe it is personal, inherited through a family line, or absorbed from someone else.
This leads us into a much bigger conversation about generational patterns, inherited beliefs, scarcity, fear of success, fear of visibility, rejection, low self-esteem, creative insecurity, and the emotional baggage we can unknowingly carry into our careers, relationships, businesses, and personal lives.
We also talk about those pivotal moments when you finally advocate for yourself without knowing exactly what the outcome will be. Molly shares how telling the truth inside her corporate role opened the door to opportunities she could not have predicted, including her coaching work, podcast, spiritual journey, and an upcoming book. I share some of my own experiences with those same moments, when saying what I actually wanted and trusting myself changed the trajectory of my career.
If you've been feeling stuck, burned out, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected from your work, questioning your identity, thinking about leaving a corporate career, exploring sobriety, rebuilding your self-worth, learning to trust yourself, or trying to understand why you keep repeating the same emotional patterns, this conversation gives you a completely different way to look at what might be keeping you in that funk and how to begin moving forward.
We cover corporate burnout, career change, sobriety, alcohol-free living, emotional healing, Emotion Code energy healing, trapped emotions, generational patterns, inherited trauma and beliefs, self-worth, self-trust, emotional regulation, aligned action, mindset, personal development, nervous system grounding, fear of success, fear of visibility, limiting beliefs, spiritual growth, executive career transitions, identity shifts, confidence, people pleasing, external validation, entrepreneurship, coaching, personal reinvention, and how to finally get yourself out of a funk.
